The Grey Pilgrim

“I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone.”

– Gandalf

On what started out as a seemingly ordinary day just over seventeen years ago, I happened to encounter an old wizard riding into Hobbiton on his cart that had been filled with the most amazing fireworks ever seen even by the oldest of Hobbits.

It’s strange to think of how long it has been since I was first introduced to Tolkien’s incredible world, initially through the vision of Peter Jackson but that first movie whetted my appetite and I moved onto the books pretty soon thereafter.

One of many characters that I immediately warmed to and still hold close to myself even today; is Gandalf.

” He wore a tall pointed grey hat, a long grey cloak, and a silver scarf. He had a long white beard and bushy eyebrows that stuck out beyond the brim of his hat.”

The foundation of every painting that I work on is a preliminary drawing; usually carried out in charcoal or pencils and then transferred to canvas via either graphite paper or using a grid method and redrawn.

As can be seen, there are a couple of variations between the initial drawing and the final painting. Deciding to include the Lonely Mountain in the distance was a decision that I reached well into the painting process; it just made sense and I couldn’t settle on any other ideas although a distant view of the Shire may have worked out just as well.

Also, as far as Gandalf artworks go this one is merely the first of many more to come; I can’t stop on just one so in the future there will definitely be more.

This original piece will be going on my store as soon as I have opened it but if you’re interested in buying it before that point and saving some money then you can contact me by using the form by Clicking Here!!
