Middle-earth has been calling yet again and never one to ignore the call of adventure, I decided to explore. My journey took me deep into the passages of The Hobbit and far under the Misty Mountains to the dark depths of the caves and subterranean lakes of forgotten times. This was the perfect opportunity to create another piece of Middle-earth art.
Let’s see what JRR Tolkien himself had to say about the place:
There are strange things living in the pools and lakes in the hearts of the mountains…
–
Some of these caves, too, go back in their beginnings to ages before the goblins, who only widened them and joined them up with passages, and the original owners are still there in odd corners, slinking and nosing about.

Gollum In His Cave
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum – as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face.

This particular illustration of Gollum was created using black and white ink and Japanese calligraphy brushes, as well as a brush pen on toned paper.
In the build up to Tolkien Reading Day it felt highly appropriate to dig in and make a start on some new Middle-earth art and venture back into the stories from The Lord of the Rings for a while, it seems like such a long time since my last visit.
This particular artwork isn’t just any old drawing however, this one is quite special and it’s available for a limited amount of people…
