7 Jawa facts every Star Wars fan SHOULD know

Articles, Star Wars Art, Uncategorized

Hello and welcome, or more appropriately in Jawaese; M’um m’aloo!

When it comes to Star Wars and the different creatures and species of the galaxy far, far away; Jawas are one of the most mysterious, curiosity-arousing and secretive of all the races in the universe.

These rodent-like natives to the desert planet of Tatooine certainly hold a surprising amount of mystery and there is no question bigger than “What do Jawas look like under the hood?” but once you start digging, that’s not the only unknown part of their culture.

With this article, however, it seemed worthwhile to dig into 7 Jawa facts every Star Wars fan should know, and if you didn’t already, here’s 7 quick-fire facts that you can use to show off your deeper knowledge of Jawas, Star Wars and the mysteries of the universe…

  1. No one knows what Jawas look like without robes
  2. Jawas use scent as part of their communication
  3. Each year there is a gathering of the Jawa clans
  4. Sandcrawlers are not made by Jawas, they are scavenged vehicles
  5. Jawas live mostly in desert fortresses, not in Sandcrawlers
  6. “Utinni” is an exclamation of surprise
  7. Jawas rarely carry any weapons

No one knows what Jawas look like without robes

There has never been a canonical reveal of what a Jawa looks like without robes. There were some behind-the-scenes shots from Return of the Jedi but these showed the costume itself rather than a definitive appearance of a Jawa without a hood or robes.

Jawas have been described as de-evolved Humans with rodent-like features and a familial likeness to Tusken Raiders.

Jawas use scent as part of their communication

The language of the Jawas, known as Jawaese, used scent as well as spoken sound to communicate and whilst Jawas used their simpler form of Jawa trade talk to enable communication with other races, their use of scent communication helped them emphasise their words and also contained information about their identity, mood, clan lineage and more.

Each year there is a gathering of the Jawa clans

Once a year on Tatooine, just before the storm season starts there is a gathering of the Jawa clans. They all turn up in their Sandcrawlers at the great basin of the Dune Sea and trade, arrange marriages and conduct other Jawa business.

Sandcrawlers are not made by Jawas, they are scavenged vehicles

The Czerka Corporation thought they had spotted an important mining opportunity on Tatooine but after discovering the unstable nature of the ores, they quickly abandoned the planet, leaving behind their mining vehicles, the Sandcrawlers.

The Jawas were quick to scavenge these mobile fortresses and use them as both protection from hostile attackers, such as Tusken Raiders and aiding their lifestyle of searching the deserts for materials.

Jawas live mostly in desert fortresses, not in Sandcrawlers

Jawas definitely do use the Sandcrawlers as a form of mobile home for the scavenger parties and the clans out on the hunt for scraps and goods, but for the most part, the clans live in fortresses in the deserts.

“Utinni” is an exclamation of surprise

There you have it folks, no need to bother searching through the ancient tomes of Jawaese to English translation as there is no direct word translation for this famous Jawa catchphrase, it is quite simply an exclamation of surprise, somewhat of a battle cry.

Jawas rarely carry any weapons

For the most part, Jawas are passive by nature and they demonstrated this ever since the first colonists arrived on Tatooine; the Jawas viewing them as business opportunities rather than threats and therefore not becoming hostile like the Tusken Raiders.

Jawas mostly carry tools for repairing machines or ion blasters for disabling droids.
