A Shortcut to Mushrooms – Charcoal

‘Hobbits have a passion for mushrooms, surpassing even the greediest likings of Big People’

The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring, Book I, Chapter V – A Conspiracy Unmasked

I recently did something that has been quite a long held ambition of mine; I depicted myself as a Hobbit. This was quite an off the cuff project, planned, sketched and completed within a few hours for a competition that I entered.

I love Hobbits; I also love mushrooms; and Hobbits love mushrooms so this tripartite arrangement birthed a new artwork.

More work on the Geisha Girl series…

This series is really beginning to come on in leaps and bounds now, I might even end up giving it its own category on my website before long.

For today’s post, I wanted to share a new pair of drawings I completed as preliminary studies for a pair of oil paintings that are in the works.

Geisha Girl Portrait II – Charcoal Drawing

Sketchbook, Uncategorized

I met another Geisha girl…

What started out as a curiosity, or cultural fascination is slowly becoming a series of artworks, some completed already and plenty on the way. I have dived deep into the streets and tea houses of Kyoto, Japan on a journey of discovery and exploration.

I won’t spend too much time harping on for now as once the series wraps up, I’ll be making a full length post featuring all of the artworks.

For now I’ll just keep these posts as short musings.

Another one for the portfolio…

I’ve been working on a new series of fine art pieces for a Geisha series over the past week or two; in the beginning as a means of getting some sketchbook work done and then it progressed onto some sketches that I wanted to take into further development.

So here we are with one of the completed pieces for the series, a Geisha Girl portrait.

Geisha Sketchbook Pages

I’ve spent a few day in Kyoto, Japan.

Not in person but through a pencil, I have been exploring and travelling, discovering a new culture and investigating the Geisha or more accurately to Kyoto, the Geiko girls of the region.

I won’t go into much details on the backgrounds and traditions of Geisha in this post due to it just being a sketchbook share, but I am going to put together a small body of artworks and I’ll dive into the deeper stuff when posting them.

Let’s get stuck in –

These sketches have been an nice introductory exercise into the world of the Geisha. The next phase for me is to drawn and paint a few portrait pieces and also one or two pieces with a more narrative style.

Also as a reminder of my last blog post, I did complete a charcoal drawing of the Nude Geisha, click the link or the image below to see that post!

So I’ve Been Back To The Drawing Board…

I felt that it was high time to change a few things with my blog/website and general artwork output. When I began this journey I began with the intentions of working more so in the area of fine art, of telling stories of my own creation and of re-imagining folklore, history and mythology.

Somewhere along the way I got wrapped in fan art, and as a lover of the fantasy genre this is easily done. I’m now going to balance the fan art work out a lot more with some more finer art; figure drawings, still life paintings and landscapes. All of which will still hold a narrative nonetheless.

Here is the latest addition to my portfolio, Kakarot. My favourite character from the Dragon Ball series and a strong childhood memory. The furthest back that I can remember drawing regularly, it was Dragon Ball characters and most especially, Goku.

The main difference being, I used to watch episodes and then draw scenes from memory, I wish I still had those early drawings, they would be interesting to look back on.

Anyway, this is the new artwork in the bag!

So it’s been a little while…

Having spent the last three months of 2019 working on my currently unfinished graphic novel ‘Corvus’ it has been nice to spend a bit of time in the first month of this year working on some other bits and pieces, new sketches and drawings, and even finishing up a painting that had been on the easel for some time.

Those other pieces can be addressed in a post for another time, this one however is dedicated to my latest charcoal drawing.

The Watercolour Sketch Series – Part I

Paintings, Sketchbook, Uncategorized

Memory Lane has been a popular destination of late…

Over the past few weeks I have been working up a series of watercolour sketches, it wasn’t really intentional, just a quick little bit of doodling some mornings before work and it soon became a part of an occasional routine.

Serving as the inspiration behind these sketches, i have been using nostalgia as a vehicle to take me down Memory Lane and revisiting iconic characters/scenes/stories from my childhood.

I have every intention of continuing this series and I have a ton of inspiration to draw from and endless artworks to create for this series. Star Wars for instance will be revisited several times, as will many of the other ones!

Anyway, let’s get into the artworks –
