Nude Geisha Girl Oil Painting

While not strictly a Geisha, this piece was worked on and created as a figure study with an emphasis on capturing the female form through oil paint. The Haiku was one that I thought of while in the process of working on the artwork.

More work on the Geisha Girl series…

This series is really beginning to come on in leaps and bounds now, I might even end up giving it its own category on my website before long.

For today’s post, I wanted to share a new pair of drawings I completed as preliminary studies for a pair of oil paintings that are in the works.

Candle Holder – Alla Prima – Still Life – Oil Painting

Finding the time to experiment…

So as a result of the current lockdown measures here in the UK I have been afforded a rare luxury within my artwork; time. Time to experiment and play about with ideas and techniques; time to learn from life studies and master studies; time to reflect on the work I’ve been doing with the pencils and brushes.

One area that I have been really getting stuck into is alla prima painting. I’ve done some pieces as still life artworks, setting up the subjects and lighting them in the way that I desire; there is no better way to learn a subject than by studying it in real life, in person. I’ve also done some alla prima paintings using reference and photography too, a total opposite to my normal slow and steady approach of building a painting up in layers, slowly and steadily.

“Keep Doing This In Remembrance Of Me.” – Luke 22:19,20 – Oil on Canvas

During the past few weeks of the UK lockdown, amongst delving into a new series of artworks I have spent a decent amount of time doing alla prima painting sessions and I’ve set up a few still life pieces to paint. It’s been nice to have the freedom of time to paint for the sake of painting and to learn, observe and explore different techniques and methods to my usual work.

For quite some time, I have say here and typed out several lines of poetry, then deleted them. Several short, two sentence storylines, then deleted them. I can’t settle on a singe idea for this painting and have therefore decided to leave any story or meaning down to the viewer’s discretion and imagination.

This painting was a total step out of my comfort zone, I used palette knives as my weapons of choice, and painted solely from imagination, this is a painting that I felt my way around as opposed to hours of studying reference photography.

Once I had it completed, I posted it to a few groups on Facebook to garner some feedback and ideas for a title. I had a lot of different titles to choose from before settling on ‘Nocturnal Sun’ – as chosen by Panagiotis Zacharatos (who won a free print in the process of giving me the title I chose).

So pretty much every stage of this painting has been a totally alien experience and process in comparison to my normal methodical approach to my artwork.

This original artwork is available to buy!

Have your say!

I would be very interested to hear what stories you would assign to this piece. What do you feel when you look at it? What do you think is happening or has happened? I’d love to hear any short stories relating to this artwork and to get those creative juices flowing!

Ringwraiths at Weathertop – Nazgul – A Knife in the Dark – Lord of the Rings Oil Painting

The Nazgul

Ringwraiths, or Nazgul are the horror element to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings story, and the scariest they ever get is quite possibly in Chapter 11 of The Fellowship of the Ring – A Knife in the Dark. With this oil painting, I wanted to capture the fear they induce and put into those who face them.

“The Ringwraiths are deadly enemies, but they are only shadows yet of the power and terror they would possess if the Ruling Ring was on their master’s hand again”

JRR Tolkien – The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring – Book I, Chapter 4 – A Journey in the Dark

A lot of what we learn about the Ringwraiths we learn fairly early on, Tolkien gives us a nice amount of detail through the words of Gandalf the Grey, as he explains to Frodo:

“It is looking at things for a long time that ripens you and gives you a deeper meaning.”

– Vincent van Gogh

It seems appropriate to start this post with a quote from the post-impressionist master himself, as it was watching the recent biographical drama about the latter years of his life ‘At Eternity’s Gate’ that inspired me to create something bolder and looser than my usual work.

“In a dark place we find ourselves, and a little more knowledge lights our way.”

– Yoda

That quote is incredibly apt when it comes to the journey that I have just taken to a galaxy far far way in order to create my latest artwork ‘Jedi Master Yoda on Dagobah’.

I took a very different approach to this piece than I usually do with my paintings; this time I wanted not to work from a single reference image and fall into the usual trap of becoming a slave to the reference and instead worked from a variety of different ones.

It all began with the drawing!

Sound An Alarm! Vikings Are Coming!

Some of history’s greatest seafarers, an inspiration to all those with an adventurous spirit, or a plundering one for that matter.

I decided to try something new with this small piece; a speed painting.

I really struggle to get a good amount of time in for a half decent painting session, working on one of my more thought out artworks and as a result, most of the time end up not painting at all. With that in mind, I had a couple of hours spare and decided to just go for it and try my hand at a speed painting.

Anyway, here it is –

The Breaking of the Fellowship…

Here we are at the final chapter of the Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two; just over two months since the Fellowship set out from Rivendell on their quest to destroy the ring and things take yet another turn for the worse.

Gandalf fell into the abyss whilst fighting the (wingless) Balrog and has been lost to the depths of Moria, still grieving, the rest of the guys have just had to up and leave the relative safety and comfort of Lothlorien after almost a month of being there.

So at this stage in the story, Frodo has done one of his famous ‘disappearing acts’ in order to give Boromir the slips but in the process given everyone else in the Fellowship a bad case of anxiety as to his whereabouts.
